THE presence of a happy hour (or happy half hour if you sat where I did) before the Morecambe game was followed by a sobering message that, as a club and a team, we are right back to where we were six years ago.
Fans in the West stand were unhappy that their draught beer failed to materialise before the match – this may seem like a trivial issue but after the last couple of years, it really is difficult to enjoy the Southend United ‘experience’ without at least a few beers to numb the pain.
This of course followed weeks of supply issues in all the club’s bars, and of course there was the ticket office shambles at the Port Vale match when staff had to think on their feet after the club ran out of paper for the tickets!
Back onto Saturday and then followed the main event itself – some calamitous defending leading to a defeat to a side rock bottom of the league, without a point on their travels and roared on by 65 away supporters.
Leaving the ground I was greeted with the sight of security guards rushing towards the ticket office. At first, I naturally assumed they were there to deal with the clambering masses queuing for Hereford tickets, but it later transpired they had to eject an abusive fan.
They were extremely heavy handed, and when passing fans took issue with the treatment dished out, one of the security guards started mocking people for supporting Southend! He could have started a riot.
I’m pretty sure that the club hasn’t been run and organised this badly since the 1990s and it cannot be helping our ever-dwindling crowds, which I think are actually holding up quite well.
And of course, there’s no news on Fossetts Farm.
Let’s hope things pick up on the pitch after two disappointing results. The signing of Nathaniel Jarvis is an interesting one, he’s a young lad but highly rated in south Wales having been Cardiff’s top academy scorer last season and will offer us some pace in attack which is lacking at the moment.
