Alex Woodyard’s long range strike was enough to give Graham Coughlan’s reserve team their first win of the season over local rivals Colchester.
Woodyard, who came on as a second-half substitute, let fly on 76 minutes to settle the game in favour of the home team.
Southend included Blair Sturrock in the starting line-up, although he was withdrawn for Scott Spencer at half-time.
Southend: Rhys Evans, Kane Ferdinand, Luke Prosser, Mark Phillips, Johnny Herd, Ryan Hall, James Stevens (Alex Woodyard), Adam Bouzid (Duane Ofiri-Acheampong), Sofiane Zaaboub, Harry Crawford, Blair Sturrock (Scott Spencer)
