Southend will have to continue their play-off push without star defender Bilel Mohsni, who has damaged ligaments in his ankle and will be out for up to eight weeks.
The centre back has been a revelation since joining in the summer from amateur club Saint Genaveve in France, and Southend turned down bids of £200,000 on transfer deadline day in the hope that he would be the catalyst for a push for promotion.
However, he was stretchered off during the second half of the 2-0 defeat against Shrewsbury on Saturday, and has damaged tendons and ligaments in his ankle.
The injury will be assessed in six weeks to see if the Frenchman is ready to begin rehabilitation. But the popular stopper will not be back in a Southend shirt until April at the earliest.
