SOUTHEND’S lethargic end to a mid-table campaign continued with a 3-1 defeat at Accrington last night.
The home side were superior throughout and took the lead after just ten minutes when a corner was converted by former Swansea midfielder Ian Craney.
Blues did equalise with a direct free kick from Ryan Hall, and improved vastly in the second half.
However, it was their only shot on target all night, and Stanley got the goal they deserved when a mix-up between Chris Barker and Glen Morris resulted in Terry Gornell scoring following a long-throw ten minutes from the end.
A harsh red card for Bilel Mohsni followed on 84 minutes when he was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Gornell in the box. The Frenchman was on borrowed time having needlessly been booked for his involvement in a first half scuffle, and was sent off by referee David Webb.
The penalty was converted by Phil Edwards to condemn Southend to their fifth straight away defeat. For the home side, it was their eighth win on the bounce at the Crown Ground, and they are still hopeful of making the League Two playoffs.
For Southend, however, the season cannot end quickly enough.
