THE jury is still out on Luke Prosser in a Southend shirt, but he saved Blues from a sixth successive away defeat with a last-gasp equaliser at Vale Park.
Prosser was dumped by the Valiants last summer after five years at the club, and endured a torrid time when they visited Roots Hall in August, being substituted at half time after a desperate display. However, the stand-in full-back took advantage of a miskick from a Vale defender to fire in an angled shot on the half-volley from 15 yards on 90 minutes.
In a game of little incident, which had a distinctive end-of-season feel to it despite Vale’s hopes of salvaging a play-off place, the home side had taken the lead through Rob Taylor’s spectacular first half shot from the edge of the Southend box.
Blues barely mustered a meaningful attempt until Anthony Grant flicked on a crossfield ball which fell to Prosser in the last minute.
