THE Southend Echo is claiming today that Graham Coughlan will become the next member of Paul Sturrock’s Southend squad to commit to the club.
The 36-year-old veteran successfully combined a coaching role with an unexpectedly vital role in Southend’s back four last season, and while he is not expected to figure nearly as much on the pitch next season, his experience will be vital as Paul Sturrock looks to improve the club’s coaching staff.
Currently, the club is running without a goalkeeper coach and an assistant manager due to cutbacks enforced by the precarious financial position it finds itself in.
On the pitch, the former Shrewsbury and Plymouth played 35 times in the centre of defence, mainly due to the prolonged absence of Mark Phillips and Bilel Mohsni.
Quoting “a source close to the club”, today’s paper suggests Coughlan will put pen to paper on a new contract shortly.
He will join Luke Prosser, Sean Clohessy, Glenn Morris, Kane Ferdinand, Ryan Hall and Lee Sawyer in signing new deals this year.
