Breakaway goals see Blues defeated

16 Jul

DUNDEE scored two breakaway goals to beat Southend in the first day of the tournament at East Fife.
Southend bossed most of the match against the Scottish Division One side but fell behind early on when an offside trap was sprung and the ball was crossed from the left for the Dundee number 11 to have an easy finish from close range.
Southend had several chances to score but failed to take them. Rohan Ricketts came on in the second half amidst rumours that Stevenage have emerged favourites to sign him.
But despite Bilel Mohsni hitting the post late on, Southend were caught on the break again and after a misunderstanding between Clohessy and Ricketts, the ball was once again crossed from the left for an easy finish.
Paul Sturrock described the defeat as “a wake up call” and Southend must now battle with Raith Rovers for the third placed spot tomorrow.
Blues are expected to field many first-year professionals in the game.
Dundee will face East Fife in the final. The hosts triumphed 7-6 against their rivals following a goal-less draw in the tournament’s first match.
