Blues fight back to hold Town

23 Jul

NEIL Harris headed his second goal for Southend as their first Roots Hall friendly ended in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich.
The Suffolk side brought a full-strength squad down and took the lead in the first half when winger Lee Martin cut in from the right and blasted a long-range shot past Glenn Morris.
Southend improved after the break and put Bilel Mohsni upfront with Harris, reverting from 4-3-3 to a more familiar 4-4-2. Mohsni hit the crossbar from a Harris cross, but it was the veteran who equalised with a fine header from Sean Clohessy’s cross.
Trialist Jean-Paul Kalala played in the match and drew praise from manager Paul Sturrock afterwards, while Mark Phillips came on at half time and looked solid at the back.
Blues continue their pre-season regime at Needham Market on Monday night before facing Norwich at Roots Hall on Thursday.
