LIAM Dickinson may make the bench for Southend United’s season opener against Hereford on Saturday, but it is likely that Neil Harris will be partnered by Bilel Mohnsi on Saturday.
After Blues showed far greater fluidity playing a 4-4-2 system during pre-season, Paul Sturrock is expected to line up with Mohsni as an emergency striker, a role he took on with some success last season.
It should mean a start for Mark Phillips in the centre of defence. Phillips is back to full fitness after injury kept him out of most of last season, and has performed solidly in pre-season. Chris Barker is expected to partner Phillips, with Luke Prosser expected to get the nod ahead of Peter Gilbert at left back.
Anthony Grant and Jean-Paul Kalala could well start in the middle, with new signing Jemal Johnson on one wing, Ryan Hall on the other.
Hereford have defender Michael Townsend suspended, and are likely to line up in a 4-5-1 system with Stuart Fleetwood as the lone striker.
Blues have won their last nine meetings with Hereford and have not lost to the Bulls at Roots Hall since 1976.
