Southend 1-0 Hereford

7 Aug

BILEL Mohsni scored the only goal of the game as Southend triumphed against Hereford yesterday.
It was a first opening day win in three years for the Shrimpers but it was far from a vintage performance, with little in the way of free-flowing football on show.
Hereford rarely threatened and Paul Sturrock will be delighted with the performance of his defenders, particularly Mark Phillips who did not put a foot wrong.
However, there was little in the way of creativity from Blues, who just about deserved the points.
The only goal of the game came in the 15th minute when Ryan Hall’s superb drilled cross from the right drew Mark Bartlett from his goal, only for Mohsni to beat him to it and nod the ball into the far corner of the North Bank net.
Mohsni also had the ball in the net in the second half but his volley was chalked off for offside. Neil Harris was also close to doubling Blues lead when his header was cleared off the line.
Hereford’s best chance fell to winger Joe Colbeck, but his late effort was blocked.
