Top of the table clash at Roots Hall

Hall may have to be content with a place on the bench

Friday night football returns to Southend tonight, with Blues aiming to go top of the League Two table with a victory over Shrewsbury.
Such a result would be no mean feat – the Shrews themselves are flying high in 2nd place, level on points with leaders Morecambe.
After the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion on the last day and then failing in the play-offs, Graham Turner’s side will be determined to secure their place in League One next season and have made a strong start.
Southend had yet to convince their supporters and indeed the rest of the division of their credentials despite being 6th ahead of last Saturday’s trip to Rotherham.
However, all that changed as the Seasiders ran riot at the Don Valley Stadium, romping to a 4-0 win which could have been even bigger had it not been for some wasteful finishing from the visitors.
Southend are now up to third and Paul Sturrock faces a nice selection dilemma. With arguably the club’s three high-profile players missing from that fantastic win, Anthony Grant, Ryan Hall and Bilel Mohsni may once again be forced to wait in the wings.
In a radio interview, Sturrock said that Grant and Hall, suspended last week, may be facing “a trip to splinter city” and it would not be a surprise if he opts to keep the same side.
Barry Corr and Lee Sawyer remain sidelined with injuries.
Shrewsbury should welcome Shane Cansdell-Sheriff back into their back line at the expense of the injured Ruben Hazell. Ian Sharps, who was excellent in the Shrews 2-0 win at Roots Hall last season, may make the bench. Their main threat will come from Marvin Morgan, the former Aldershot striker who signed on a free in the summer. The big forward has already netted seven times and links up well with Lionel Ainsworth, a tricky customer on the wing.
