Aldershot left back Anthony Straker has become the second new signing at Roots Hall this summer.
The 23-year-old former Crystal Palace player joins on a two-year contract.
His existing deal at Aldershot had expired, but Southend will have to pay a fee at a tribunal because Straker is under 24.
It puts the future of Southend’s existing left back Peter Gilbert in doubt, as he has yet to sign a new contract with the club.
Straker is described as an attack-minded full-back with a good turn of pace and a good cross. However, some Shots fans have criticised his short passing ability, and believe he has not lived up to the promise he showed in previous seasons.
Paul Sturrock will be hoping that Straker’s potential can finally be realised with a new start at Southend.
