Gilbert released by Shrimpers

6 Jul

Peter Gilbert has been allowed to leave Southend after his contract expired last weekend.
The 28-year-old spent two seasons at Roots Hall, but failed to win over the supporters despite being one of the Blues’ most improved players last season.
With the signing of Anthony Straker having been completed last week and the ability of Luke Prosser and Chris Barker to play at left back, Gilbert was deemed surplus to requirements by Paul Sturrock, despite the Blues boss stating he is “the best defensive left back in the league”.
