Midfield duo leave Southend

VETERAN Christian Dailly and fellow central midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala have both left the club, Paul Sturrock has confirmed.
Kalala’s contract expired at the end of June, and Sturrock opted against signing up the Frenchman for another season.
The combative former Grimsby man sustained a nasty knee injury at Morecambe in February which sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Prior to that, he made 30 appearances for Blues, his only goal coming in the embarrassing 4-1 home reverse against champions-elect Swindon.
Christian Dailly joined up with the squad in March on non-contract terms, and figured in a handful of matches before suffering a toe complaint that ruled him out for the rest of the season.
At 38, Dailly has decided to focus on getting his coaching badges and completing a sports science degree.
It means Sturrock will have to ramp up his search for new central midfielders. With Lee Sawyer having already been released and Anthony Grant having departed for Stevenage, currently Michael Timlin and Kane Ferdinand are the only recognised central midfielders at the club.
Speaking to the Southend Echo, Sturrock says he is looking at different systems for next season and wants players with different abilities to those possessed by Kalala, primarily a destructive, defensive midfielder whose qualities as a holding player far outweighed his attacking attributes.
