Match report: Hereford 1-3 Southend

25 Sep

After four minutes this match report was going to be full of asterisks, as I ranted about dodgy goalkeeping. Fortunately after a shaky 20 mins the Shrimpers realised they were up against another poor league 2 side who were there for the taking, and set about taking all three points. But after Morris was beaten far too easily at his near post in the opening minutes from a needless free kick it looked to be a long afternoon ahead.
After 27 minutes Sturrock found space on the right hand side and placed the ball on Corr’s head to level it up. The only other incident of note in the first half was the (hapless) referee managing to miss the Hereford No. 9 planting a head butt on Grant.
The second half was pretty much all Southend and the points were virtually sewn up after Timlin fired in a beauty from a free kick after 52 mins.
After 67 mins fans favourite Sturrock Jnr swept in the third (actually he fired straight at the keeper and the ball ricocheted off his shin and trickled over the line!) to guarantee a happy journey home.
New signing Jarvis had a 15 minute run out and looked lively but to be honest the game was over with Hereford firing over a couple of times the only real excitement.
In the end I’ve seen us play better but we didn’t have to be that good to be better than a poor Hereford side that offered little throughout the game so I’m sure Luggy will be happy to take the points and move on up the league!
